How the ‘Corvette’ gets its name is up for debate
Faced with a choice of two names for a car that has won five world championships, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Inc. has chosen to name its new model the Corvette.
The decision came after the company, which is known for building small cars that are affordable, tested and marketed the new model in a series of high-end shows.
But the name “Corvette” was not the only one being debated.
“The word Corvette is one that we were constantly considering and looking at and having that come to fruition was a real challenge,” Mr. Giannini said during a recent call with reporters.
The new Corvette, which will be released in late 2018, will be available in both four-door and convertible variants.
Fiat Chrysler did not specify the size of the new car, but said it will have a smaller wheelbase than its current vehicle, the C6 Corvette, with a base price of $55,000.
The company said the redesigned car will offer more than just a bigger trunk space, which was a selling point for the new SUV.
“We’re talking about an SUV that’s much larger than the previous C6, which we said, ‘We’re going to give you a larger footprint,’ ” Mr. Gabrielli said.
“I think people are going to be very excited about the size.”
The C6 was introduced in 2005 as the successor to the now-iconic Chevrolet Camaro.
Its body was sculpted in a “slimline” and aero design, and it is based on the Camaro’s bodywork.
In addition to being a sporty crossover, the Camaros also offer a range of luxury and everyday choices.
The Corvette has been one of the best-selling cars in the U.S. since its introduction.
Sales rose by almost 300% from the previous year to $2.7 billion.
But Fiat Chrysler is not going to let its new car stand in the way of that success.
The brand is already expanding its production of the Corvettes to Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, and the company plans to unveil the new C7 sedan later this year.
“There is no doubt the new Corvette is going to get a lot of attention and recognition in the United States and globally,” Mr.’
The C7 will have all the bells and whistles of the previous Corvette, but will be significantly more affordable and feature a new rear-wheel drive system, Mr. Gabrielelli said, which may be a selling pitch to some buyers.
“It is going be the biggest sedan in the world,” Mr., Gabriello said.
That is the message the brand is trying to send.
